Bono East: A comprehensive polio immunization campaign has been launched in Bono East, targeting over 240,000 children under the age of five. Dr. Paulina Clara Appiah, the Acting Bono East Regional Director of Health, announced the initiative as part of efforts to bolster immunity against Poliomyelitis in the region. According to Ghana News Agency, the immunization drive will administer the Neval Oral Polio Vaccine Type Two (NOPV Type 2) to infants aged zero to 59 months. This vaccination aims to enhance the children's immune systems and provide protection against the debilitating effects of the polio virus. Dr. Appiah emphasized the urgency of the campaign during her visits to early childhood development centers and health facilities in the Kintampo Municipality, marking the start of the first phase of the immunization exercise scheduled from October 17 to 20, 2024. Dr. Appiah highlighted the critical nature of the campaign, noting that the polio virus was detected in the Eastern Region in September, neces sitating immediate action to prevent its spread. The detection of an Algerian strain of the virus has heightened the need for vaccination efforts. The second phase of the immunization exercise is slated for November 14 to 17, 2024, with Dr. Appiah urging parental participation to ensure widespread coverage. She reiterated the importance of immunization as a definitive method to shield children from virus-related diseases, explaining that many viruses spread through contaminated food, water, and direct contact with infected surfaces or individuals. Dr. Appiah also assured parents that immunization officers would conduct home visits to vaccinate children unable to attend health facilities. In support of the campaign, Nana Afia Owusuaa Pumpumatifihenemaa, a sub-queen of the Kintampo Traditional Area, encouraged parents to prioritize their children's health by participating in the immunization drive and supporting its objectives.
