JIRAPA: Rural women farmers in the Jirapa Constituency have articulated a six-point demand to Parliamentary Candidates (PCs) as part of their advocacy for better representation in Parliament by 2025. Their demands focus on improved agricultural support, including mechanization services, subsidized inputs, low-interest credit, timely extension services, better market access, and the provision of dams for alternative livelihoods during the dry season. According to Ghana News Agency, these demands were presented by Ms. Esther Zuri, Secretary of the Women in Agriculture Platform (WAP) in the Jirapa Municipality, during a forum organized by ActionAid Ghana (AAG) to mark the International Day of Rural Women. The event's theme emphasized the critical role of rural women in cultivating climate-resilient agriculture and achieving food sovereignty. AAG's initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Two, which aims to end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture. Ms. Zuri highlighted the ch allenges faced by rural women, particularly the difficulty in accessing affordable credit. She emphasized the necessity of low-interest loans to facilitate farming activities and noted that some women resort to charcoal burning due to a lack of alternative income sources during the dry season. Mr. Justin Bayor, Head of Programmes, Campaigns, and Innovations at AAG, recognized the contributions of rural women to climate-resilient agriculture. He called for increased investment in agroecological farming and suggested prioritizing rural women in the implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs phase II. He also advocated for the development of indigenous seeds to enhance farmers' resilience to climate change. Political commitments were also addressed at the forum. Madam Ayisha Salifu, the New Patriotic Party PC for Jirapa, highlighted her 'Women for Sustainable Development' initiative aimed at supporting women's agricultural activities. She pledged to enhance these services and address the demands if elect ed. Similarly, Mr. Cletus Dapilah, the National Democratic Congress PC, reiterated the party's manifesto commitments, including the establishment of a women's bank to support female farmers. Both candidates assured their dedication to maintaining peace throughout the election process.
