South Korean Court Issues Suspended Sentences for Assault on Journalists During Riot

Seoul: A South Korean court has issued suspended prison sentences to four individuals involved in a courthouse riot related to the ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol. The incident, which took place last year, saw journalists being assaulted during a protest, as reported by local media.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced each of the four defendants to one year in prison, with the sentences suspended for two years. The charges included special assault, stemming from an event on January 19, last year, when the individuals trespassed onto the court premises and assaulted broadcast journalists. The protest was in response to the court's decision to extend Yoon's detention following his declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.

The court noted that the defendants obstructed the journalists' movement and used derogatory language, contributing to a hostile and pressurized environment. It dismissed the defense's claims that the actions were not intentional.

Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office after being convicted of imposing martial law in December 2024. He is currently serving a life sentence related to the martial law charges, with additional legal cases pending against him.
