UNHCR Engages with New ECOWAS Court Leadership to Strengthen Collaboration

ABUJA: The newly appointed leaders of the ECOWAS Court, President Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves and Vice President Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma, welcomed a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in a courtesy visit aimed at reinforcing ties between the two organizations. The meeting emphasized the commitment of the ECOWAS Court to uphold and advance their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UNHCR. According to Ghana News Agency, President Ricardo Gonçalves assured the UNHCR delegation of the Court's dedication to fostering a productive partnership under the existing MoU. "You can count on the full support of the Court," he affirmed, highlighting the Court's readiness to collaborate effectively with the UNHCR. The UNHCR delegation, led by Senior Adviser Hervé Kuate, congratulated the new ECOWAS Court leadership and recognized the enduring relationship between the two bodies. Kuate emphasized the importance of leveraging the current MoU to build on past a chievements and explore new avenues for cooperation. "We look forward to building on the achievements and exploring new horizons together," he stated. Vice President Sengu Mohamed Koroma expressed gratitude for the UNHCR's visit and conveyed his optimism for a continued and enhanced partnership. The meeting also saw contributions from Dr. Yaouza Ouro-Sama, the Court's Chief Registrar, who provided updates on the implementation of the MoU signed in 2022. This agreement focuses on strengthening capacity-building, training, and other collaborative endeavors between the organizations. Following the main discussions, the Chief Registrar conducted a technical meeting with the UNHCR delegation to develop an action plan for the upcoming activities as outlined in the MoU. This visit marked the first official engagement for the new leadership of the ECOWAS Court, signaling the importance of their relationship with the UNHCR.
