Tunis: A programme aimed at strengthening women's role in the tourism sector based on three initiatives was presented by Habib Ammar, Tunisia's candidate for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary-General position.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, these initiatives include the launch of a Women Leaders in Tourism programme with scholarships, mentoring, and funding, as stated by Ammar in an interview with TAP Studio. Additionally, he announced a global programme for equality and the implementation of actions to promote youth employment in the tourism industry.
Ammar emphasized that tourism fosters the inclusion of women, youths, and all disadvantaged groups, and serves as an important driving force for national and global economies. Addressing the mechanisms needed to bridge the digital gap, he noted that the tourism sector is undergoing a digital revolution. This transformation necessitates alignment with global digital advancements, enabling visitors to discover desired destinations more effectively.
He highlighted the inevitability of advancing with technological evolution while contemplating the risks associated, particularly the protection of personal data and reducing the digital gap between technologically advanced countries and those that are lagging. To address these challenges, Ammar proposed the introduction of new policies aimed at reducing the digital divide and enhancing the capacities of countries with limited experience in this area.
The third initiative of this programme includes the creation of a digital tourism accelerator. This aims to finance the adoption of technologies in developing countries and collaborate with major companies to provide affordable solutions to the tourism industry.
