Weta Rice Farmers Association of Ghana Calls for Increased Agricultural Investment to Spur Industrialization

Ketu north: The Weta Rice Farmers Association of Ghana (WRIFAG) has advocated for enhanced governmental support and investment in the agricultural sector, emphasizing its critical role as the foundation of industrialization in Ghana. During the association's launch event in Klenormadi, Ketu North, WRIFAG's patron, Mr. Sampson Klutsey Gamenyah, highlighted the urgent need for interest-free loans and improved infrastructure to achieve self-sufficiency in food production and sustainable economic growth. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gamenyah addressed the gathering, consisting of 312 association members including farmers, artisans, and professionals from the Volta Region's districts of Ketu North, South, and Akatsi North and South. He emphasized that agriculture should be the primary focus for creating jobs and stimulating industrial growth. He criticized past governmental efforts that established factories without a sustainable raw material base, pointing out the disconnect between industrial policies an d agricultural development. Mr. Gamenyah also called for the rehabilitation of the Weta Irrigation Project, which he described as once the country's most beautiful irrigation structure. He highlighted the increasing cost of agricultural inputs and the need for subsidies and research to improve input quality and efficiency. WRIFAG, which primarily focuses on rice production with some members also engaging in cassava, maize, and sweet potato cultivation, plays a significant role in the local economy. Dr. Bright Atsu Sogbey, President of the Africa Development Council, who chaired the launch event, remarked on the potential of WRIFAG to reduce rice imports significantly. He noted a decline in rice imports from 805,000 metric tonnes in 2021 to 440,000 metric tonnes in 2023, underscoring the association's impact on boosting local production and achieving food security. Torgbui Gbordzor VII, Dufia of Klenormadi, also spoke at the event, urging the government to prioritize agriculture by improving infrastructure, reintroducing subsidies, and reducing import duties on agricultural machinery and equipment. Mr. Michael Agbetsiafa, President of WRIFAG, echoed the sentiment of teamwork and collective effort towards ensuring national food security. The launch was marked by cultural performances and poetry recitals and was attended by various stakeholders in the agricultural sector, highlighting the theme 'Agriculture Revolution: A Sine Qua Non for Industrial Transformation in Ghana-The Role of WRIFAG.'
