Accra: A 13-member Board of Trustees has been inaugurated for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), also known as MahamaCares, with the aim of providing financial assistance to individuals living with chronic diseases across the country.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Board is chaired by Mr. Anthony Ashitei Lithur, a private legal practitioner, and includes members such as Madam Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of GMTF, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, and Dr. Belinda Afriyie Nimako, representing the Ministry of Health.
The Board also comprises Mr. Patrick Nomo, representing the Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Nelly Bernice Wallace from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Dr. Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khaliq (MP) representing the health sector, and Dr. Yaw Adu-Agyei Gyamfi from the pharmaceutical industry.
Additional members include Prof. Alfred Doku, a health professional and chronic disease expert, Mrs. Ann Pearl Akiwumi Siriboe, a legal practitioner, and three presidential nominees: Dr. Linda Narh, Cletus Seidu Dapilah, and Mr. Godwin Ako Gunn.
The Fund aims to cover the cost of care and medication for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) not currently included under the National Health Insurance Scheme, thereby complementing it by supporting critical aspects of these conditions. It will also invest in health infrastructure, medical equipment, specialist training, and research to enhance access to quality healthcare.
The inauguration of the Board reaffirms the Fund's commitment to serving with compassion, integrity, and purpose, advancing healthcare equity, and ensuring that no Ghanaian life is lost to a preventable or treatable condition.
