14-Year-Old Girl in Ghana Seeks Medical Help After Sudden Illness

ABURI: A 14-year-old girl, Hannah Odeibea, from the Akuapim South Municipality in Ghana's Eastern Region, is appealing for assistance to diagnose and treat a mysterious medical condition that has impaired her mobility and use of her hands. Despite being referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, financial constraints have prevented her family from seeking the necessary medical care. According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Odeibea, a form three student at Aburi Amanfo M/A Junior High School, has been living with this condition since the age of nine. Her parents, unable to afford transportation and medical expenses, have left her condition untreated for the past five years. The illness has left her fingers bent towards her palm and her feet unable to lay flat, making walking or wearing shoes difficult. Consequently, she relies on others for mobility. During a visit to her school, Ms. Odeibea expressed her sadness at being unable to participate in activities she once enjoyed, such as netball. Despite her condition, she remains determined to pursue her dream of becoming a medical doctor. She continues to attend school, receiving motorcycle rides and assistance to her desk, where she remains until the end of the school day. Community rumors suggest her condition is linked to her mother's alleged refusal to become a fetish priestess. However, at school, she is recognized as a brilliant student, often topping her class in academics. Her Mathematics teacher, Mr. Bernard Abosi Amoah, emphasized that the school ensures she is not stigmatized and encourages other students to assist her. He believes she could achieve great success if provided with appropriate medical attention.
