Accra: 'The Our Community Focus' (OCOF), a community development organisation at Ablekuma Central Municipality in Accra, has appealed to the government to pay attention to the feeder roads in the area. Mr Ebenezer Annang, the Executive Director of OCOF, made the appeal during their maiden engagement with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Frank Nkansah, at a meeting organised in collaboration with the Global Dignity Forum. The meeting aimed to brainstorm how the OCOF, together with the MCE and other stakeholders, could embark on developmental projects in the Ablekuma Central Municipality to improve the lives of the citizenry.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Annang noted that the concept of the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies was to bring governance and development closer to the people through the assembly members of the electoral areas. He expressed concern that Ablekuma Central was yet to experience this, highlighting the lack of resources for assembly members as a significant challenge. Mr Annang pointed out that while Members of Parliament received GHS 200,000 for educational projects, assembly members lack similar financial support to engage their communities in developmental activities.
In response, Mr Nkansah outlined several projects that his administration would undertake, including job creation, security, education, health, roads, and market rehabilitation to improve living conditions. He emphasized the need to scale up revenue mobilisation and create avenues to fund these projects, calling on opinion and religious leaders, business institutions, and individuals in the municipality to support these objectives.
Mr Nkansah also addressed issues related to vehicle impoundment, urging vehicle owners to pay penalties to retrieve their vehicles. He warned shop owners and spare-parts dealers against using the frontage of people's houses as garages. Additionally, he expressed concern over sanitation issues, cautioning landlords against connecting sewage into drains, as the assembly would prosecute offenders.
Naa Addoley Ablade I, Shukura and Sempe New Town Queen Mother, who chaired the occasion, called on community members to put aside partisan politics and support the assembly's development agenda. She emphasized the importance of unity in rallying behind the MCE and assembly members to make development projects a reality in Ablekuma Central.
