ACCRA: The Accra Golden Lions Club has made a significant contribution to breast cancer patients at Tema General Hospital by donating crocheted breast prosthetics. This initiative aims to improve the emotional well-being and comfort of patients recovering from mastectomies, aligning with the club's humanitarian mission during October, recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Richard Anthony, Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, reflected on the impact of this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, noting its widespread influence. He emphasized the theme that no individual should face breast cancer alone, as the disease often leads to emotional isolation. Dr. Anthony highlighted the importance of social support and healthcare assistance, stressing that early detection is crucial in managing breast cancer effectively. The Medical Director pointed out that breast cancer is significantly more common in women but also affects men, albeit less frequently. He a dvised that both men and women should be vigilant about their breast health, as early detection through self-examinations and regular medical screenings can greatly enhance treatment outcomes. Dr. Anthony identified several risk factors for breast cancer, including early menstruation onset, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and obesity. He underscored the role of genetics, noting that a family history of breast cancer increases susceptibility. Preventive measures include adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and annual mammograms for women over 40. Madam Nana Kadidia Toure, Chairperson of the Breast Cancer Awareness Committee for the Accra Golden Lions Club, highlighted the club's commitment to supporting breast cancer survivors. She mentioned the stigma survivors often face post-mastectomy and reiterated the club's dedication to alleviating these challenges through their donation of 100 crocheted breast prosthetics to the hospital's patients.
