ACCRA: One person has died from cholera in the Ada East District, contributing to a total of 43 confirmed cases across three districts in the Greater Accra Region. The outbreak has raised concerns over sanitation and water quality in the affected areas. According to Ghana News Agency, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate's Cholera Outbreak-Situational Report No. 11 revealed that Ada East accounted for 37 of the confirmed cases, while Ada West recorded five cases, and Kpone-Katamanso reported one case. The report detailed that the affected individuals include 22 females and 21 males, ranging in age from one to over 50 years old. The report traced the initial outbreak to six confirmed cases in the Ada East and West Districts, attributing the spread of the acute diarrheal disease to Vibrio cholerae infections. The main sources of drinking water in these communities-uncovered wells, boreholes, and contaminated sachet water-were identified as key contributors to the outbreak. The affected regions were also noted for poor sanitation conditions, including open defecation and indiscriminate waste disposal, exacerbated by limited access to toilet facilities and waste disposal sites. The situational report indicated that as of October 22, 2024, there were 284 suspected cases, with 802 contacts identified. Of these, 581 have completed a five-day mandatory follow-up, while 221 remain under observation, none of whom have developed symptoms.
