Africa Health Collaborative Meeting Emphasizes Research for Advancing Healthcare Systems

KUMASI: The Africa Health Collaborative, a partnership aimed at transforming Africa's Primary Health Care systems, has underscored the importance of innovative research approaches to advance healthcare across the continent. The collaboration emphasized that supporting healthcare interventions with data-driven evidence is crucial for Africa's development of robust healthcare systems. According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Chairperson of the Executive Steering Committee of the Africa Health Collaborative, highlighted the objective of establishing resilient post-COVID-19 health systems by leveraging data generated during the pandemic. He noted that this would be achieved by engaging Africa's motivated and skilled youth, alongside committed stakeholders from participating institutions. At the 2024 Africa Health Collaborative Convening in Kumasi, Prof. Owusu-Dabo announced that the Mastercard Foundation had approved research as a key component within the Collaborative's three pillars: health employment, health ecosystem, and health entrepreneurship. The event, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, was themed 'Nyansapo: Innovating Health Systems in Africa for Africa and the World' and included members from nine higher education institutions, stakeholders, policymakers, and health entrepreneurs. The meeting also explored the significance of south-south collaborations, youth involvement, and entrepreneurship in developing sustainable and innovative health systems. Emerita Professor Isabella Quakyi from the University of Ghana emphasized the integration of traditional medicine with modern technology to revolutionize healthcare, offering culturally relevant solutions to Africa's health challenges. Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, Minister of Health, stated that innovating the health system is both a necessity and an opportunity to create a healthier and more equitable future for Ghana. He stressed the importance of institutions like the Africa Health Collaborative in researching and developing data-driven s olutions to enhance health systems across the continent.
