ACCRA: Madam Genevieve Partington, Director of Amnesty International Ghana, has called on the Attorney General to actively support a legislative bill that seeks to exempt sanitary products from taxes. This advocacy was voiced during an art exhibition in Accra that marked the International Day of the Girl Child, emphasizing the urgent need for this tax relief to aid young girls, especially in rural areas. According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Partington highlighted the efforts of some Members of Parliament who are currently backing the bill but stressed that the Attorney General's involvement could significantly accelerate the legislative process. She expressed a strong desire for the initiative to originate from the government, particularly from the Attorney General's office, to effectively champion the cause. The event, themed "Girls Vision for the Future," not only celebrated the potential and rights of young girls but also underscored their basic needs, including access to sanitary products. Madam Partin gton pointed out the dire situations where girls resort to using cement paper, tissue, or banana leaves during menstruation due to the unaffordability of sanitary pads. She emphasized that such taxing of sanitary products as luxury items is unjust and counterproductive, as it hampers the education and health of girls. The art exhibition also featured the "MenstruART Competition 2024," organized by Amnesty International, where over 40 artists portrayed the challenges faced by young girls during menstruation. Ten artists were honored, with Ms. Angelina Ampofo Asomaning, also known as "Abena Oyiwaa," taking the top prize. Her artwork, titled "Purity," resonated with the theme "Together for a Period Friendly Ghana," highlighting the critical issue of menstrual health and hygiene. In her interaction with the media, Ms. Asomaning shared her joy on winning the competition and called on the government to adopt policies that promote menstrual hygiene, reflecting the collective call at the event for enhanced governme ntal action on this front.
