ACCRA: The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in collaboration with DasBiogas and Construction Limited, has launched a new onsite biogas plant capable of processing 180 tonnes of organic waste daily. This initiative aims to convert organic waste into biogas for cooking and organic fertilizer, supporting the city's waste management and clean energy goals. According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, described the biogas plant as an innovative solution aligned with the Assembly's Climate Action Plan for 2020-2025. She emphasized the plant's significance in managing Accra's solid waste, noting its potential to reduce landfill waste and generate clean energy. Mrs. Sackey also announced plans for a larger plant at Kaneshie to meet the increasing demand for compressed natural gas, highlighting the project's role in mitigating harmful emissions and addressing waste management challenges. Mr. Enock Kofi Boadu, CEO of DasBiogas and Construction Limited, expressed enthusiasm for the project, which has been in development since 2016. He emphasized the adaptability of the DasBiogas Portable Prefab Biogas Plant, launched in 2022, as a solution for homes, schools, hotels, and businesses. Mr. Boadu called for government support to expand biogas technology across Ghana, underscoring its potential to reduce reliance on LPG imports and decrease landfill waste. Mr. Herbert Krapa, representing the Minister of Energy, commended the project for advancing Ghana's renewable energy goals. He highlighted the biogas system's role in addressing waste management, energy security, and environmental sustainability, aligning with the Ministry's strategy to promote waste-to-energy technologies. The commissioning event at the Omanye Aba Hall, AMA, was attended by government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and assembly members. The project is poised to serve as a model for future waste-to-energy initiatives in Accra and beyond, contributing to sustainable development and the city's t ransition to green energy.
