Takoradi: The Apremdo Traditional Council has expressed deep concern over the government’s inaction regarding the dormant Apremdo market, which was constructed two decades ago but remains inactive.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Council raised questions about why the Jubilee Park, a national symbol commemorating the country’s 50th anniversary, has been converted into a market while the Apremdo market remains unused. The transformation of Jubilee Park into a market space has impacted recreational activities in the metropolis, with events like the annual Kofi Kinnata’s Made in Tadi concert being affected.
During a visit to Mr. Abdul Majeed Dokurugu, the newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Effia Kwesimintim Municipal Assembly, Nana Egya Kwamina XI, leader of the Council, voiced displeasure over the situation. The Apremdohene highlighted the importance of markets in community and national development, comparing Takoradi’s market situation to other major cities like Accra and Kumasi, which have multiple thriving trade centers.
Nana Egya Kwamina XI urged the new MCE to make a decisive move regarding the Apremdo market, emphasizing that activating the market could lead to economic growth and empowerment for local women. The Chief also addressed issues like youth drug involvement, commending the Assembly for its actions against local ghettos, and called for improvements in infrastructure such as electoral areas, drainage, security, lighting, and transport services at the market.
Mr. Dokurugu welcomed the Council’s visit and expressed his commitment to collaborating with the chieftaincy ministry to drive development. He acknowledged that his initial Municipal Security meeting addressed many concerns raised by the Council and assured that he would consult with relevant agencies in Accra to implement changes.
The MCE also expressed concern about the Jubilee Park’s transformation into a market, noting potential safety risks for aircraft operations at the nearby Airforce Base. He warned that failure to act could result in negative international attention for Ghana.
Mr. Dokurugu pledged to work with stakeholders to address the issues at Jubilee Park and to revive the Apremdo market, aiming to mitigate the emerging national crisis and improve the local economy.
