Ashaiman: Some traders in the Ashaiman market have shared divergent views on the annual celebration of Valentine’s Day, saying, despite the demands of their work, they find joy in the little things that make the Day special to them.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Esinam Mawutey, a fruit seller, sees the day as an opportunity to boost sales while spreading love. She explained that Valentine’s Day draws many customers looking for fresh fruits like apples, grapes, and strawberries, which are popular gifts due to their symbolism of sweetness and care. Despite the busy nature of the day, Ms. Mawutey ensures she shares some of her fruits with her family, emphasizing the importance of family time by saying, “After long working hours, I take some fruits home, and we eat together as a family.”
Ms. Cecilia Adjetey, a fabric trader, finds Valentine’s Day to be a blend of business and family time. She noted that red and white fabrics are in high demand during this period as people desire to sew beautiful outfits for the occasion. After closing from work, Ms. Adjetey prepares a special meal for her husband and children, focusing on the quality time spent together rather than on extravagant gifts. She highlighted, “It is not about big gifts for me; it is the time we spend that matters.”
Ms. Mercy Ackon, who sells chocolates and teddy bears, shared her belief that Valentine’s Day is about appreciation and love rather than just material gifts. She expressed that even without receiving a gift from her husband, a simple “I love you” holds significant meaning for her. Ms. Ackon often surprises her children with chocolates to bring them joy and noted that the period typically sees an increase in business as many customers purchase chocolates for their loved ones.
