Assembly Introduces Strategic Plan to Combat Climate Change in Sekondi-Takoradi

SEKONDI-TAKORADI: The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has unveiled the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP), a comprehensive policy document aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and energy access within the metropolis. The plan seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase access to clean energy, and build resilience against climate impacts while promoting sustainable economic growth. According to Ghana News Agency, the SEACAP is a product of collaboration between the STMA, the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), and PSS Urbania, a local consultant. The initiative involved a thorough review of existing climate change data and consultations with households and key stakeholders to develop a strategic framework for the metropolis. The project receives co-funding from the European Union and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, with implementation by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Mr. Abdul-Mumin Issah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Sekondi-Takoradi, emphasized the global significance of addressing climate change and highlighted the assembly's commitment to taking decisive actions. Research conducted during the document's preparation revealed that greenhouse gas emissions per person in Sekondi-Takoradi stand at 26 percent of the global average, with emissions originating from stationary sources, waste, and mobile sources. Mr. Issah warned that, without urgent interventions, these emissions could increase by 40 percent in the next decade. The SEACAP, structured around climate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable energy access, aims to transform Sekondi-Takoradi into a smart and resilient metropolis with low-carbon transportation, sustainable waste management, and renewable energy to achieve net-zero carbon by 2050. Dr. Dirk Assman, GIZ Ghana Country Director, described the SEACAP's launch as a significant milestone in confronting climate change in the city. He noted t hat the STMA's efforts set an example for other cities, demonstrating that local action can have a global impact. Dr. Assman reiterated the shared commitment of GIZ and the European Union to support the realization of the plan's targets. Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, the Western Regional Minister, praised the STMA for its leadership in combating climate change in the region. Ms. Shea O'Neil, Country Manager for CoM SSA in Ghana, expressed satisfaction in supporting the development of the SEACAP document, underscoring its importance in addressing the metropolis's climate challenges.
