Assertions of Curse Could Impact Black Stars’ Performance, Says Coach Otto Addo

ACCRA: Otto Addo, the head coach of Ghana's national soccer team, the Black Stars, expressed concern that claims of the team being cursed might negatively influence the players' mindset. This follows the team's recent defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which has left them with only two points from four matches. According to Ghana News Agency, Addo reflected on the challenging period following the loss, describing it as "a hard pill" that left him "dead for two days," highlighting the emotional toll on the team and those connected to it. Despite the setback, Addo remains optimistic about the team's chances, emphasizing that they still have a mathematical possibility of qualifying for the tournament. He stated, "It's not over yet. Mathematically, there's still a chance, and we will do everything that is in our hands to hold this chance alive." Addo pointed out that external influences, particularly from the media, could be impacting the players' mentality. He warned against the danger of players internalizing negative narratives, such as the belief in a curse, which could affect their performance. "People are saying this; people are saying that. And the problem comes if you start to believe. Let's say there's a curse on the team or whatsoever," Addo remarked, noting that such beliefs could lead players to doubt themselves during critical moments in matches. The coach underscored the importance of mental resilience and teamwork, urging players to maintain confidence in their abilities and to support one another, even in challenging situations. "You have to believe in yourself. You have to be mentally very, very strong to believe in yourself and to believe in your teammates and support your teammates in whatever situation," he said. Addo also spoke about the importance of adhering to the team's strategic plan, which he believes is crucial for overcoming adversity. Looking ahead, the Black Stars are set to return to action in November for the final two matches of the 2025 AFCON q ualifiers, where they will face Angola and Niger. Addo's comments highlight the psychological aspects of sports performance and the role of media narratives in shaping team dynamics.
