Accra: The leader of the Democracy Hub anti-galamsey protest group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, is now facing a new charge after the state withdrew an earlier theft allegation. During a court session on Thursday, a Senior State Attorney announced a revised charge sheet, dismissing the previous charge of stealing keys to a police towing vehicle and instead accusing Barker-Vormawor of intentionally turning off the ignition of the vehicle. Meanwhile, four other individuals linked to the case have been discharged. According to Ghana News Agency, the newly updated charge sheet led to the discharge of Cedric Bansah, Emmanuel Offei, Nana Amo Mensah Prempeh, and Thomas Yeboah, who were initially charged alongside Barker-Vormawor. While the theft charge against Barker-Vormawor was dropped, he still faces other charges, including conspiracy, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace, and assault on a public officer. Barker-Vormawor and eight others have denied the cha rges and remain on bail. The legal proceedings follow the arrest of 53 members of the Democracy Hub group, who were detained for alleged lawlessness connected to their protest activities. A Circuit Court in Accra had previously released seven of these protesters, and on Thursday, the state dropped charges against four more individuals.
