Basic Schools in Lower Manya Krobo Host Mock Durbar for Ngmayem Festival

ODUMASE-KROBO: Basic school students in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality took part in the inaugural Manya Klo Ngmayem festival mock durbar, held at the Konor's Palace in Odumase-Krobo, Eastern Region. The event aimed to familiarize the younger generation with Krobo culture and left attendees impressed by the children's accurate reenactment of the main festival durbar. According to Ghana News Agency, the mock durbar is a new addition to the Ngmayem festival activities, which are celebrated annually by the chiefs and people of Manya Krobo. Eight basic schools participated, representing various divisions within the community. These included Odumase Presby JHS, Kodjonya Millenium Presby JHS, Agormanya Methodist JHS, Yokwenor MA Basic School, Agormanya RC JHS, Matse Israel Basic School, and Our Lady of Fatimah School. Gilbert Nene Domesiakor Odjidja, Chairperson of the Ngmayem Festival Planning Committee, praised the event's success and noted ongoing discussions with the Traditional Council to expand the scope of future mock durbars. He commended the participating students and teachers, as well as the parents for dressing the children in traditional kente cloths. The Manya Klo Ngmayem Festival is a significant cultural event in the Eastern Region of Ghana, celebrating the Krobo people's heritage. The festival's name, derived from the Dangme words 'Ngma' and 'yemi,' translates to 'the Eating of Millet' festival. It originated in 1944 under Oklemekuku Azzu Mate Kole, replacing the earlier 'Yereyeli' festival introduced by his father, Sir Emmanuel Mate Kole. The Ngmayem Festival was established to better connect with the Krobo community, following the decline of the earlier celebration.
