Breast Cancer Awareness Emphasized by Medical Officer in Ghana

Accra: Dr. Enyonam Abiti, a Medical Officer at the Pentecost Hospital in Madina, Accra, has urged women to prioritize their health by seeking professional medical care for breast cancer diagnosis and management. Her comments were made during a breast screening exercise aimed at sensitizing workers about breast cancer risks and preventive measures. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Abiti emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups and following evidence-based treatment plans for breast cancer, cautioning against the reliance on herbal medicines and spiritual cures. She warned that using non-medical remedies could result in delayed diagnosis, advanced cancer stages, and reduced survival rates. During the event, which was organized by the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Offices of the Ghana Cocoa Board in Sunyani, Dr. Abiti underscored that while faith and herbal remedies might offer emotional support, they are not replacements for medical treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiatio n therapy. These medical interventions have been shown to improve survival rates and enhance the quality of life for breast cancer patients. Dr. Abiti also stressed the critical importance of early detection, advising women to seek immediate medical attention upon experiencing breast cancer symptoms. Highlighting research findings, she noted that one in eight women could develop breast cancer, compared to one in 1,000 men, underscoring the need for regular screenings to prevent late-stage presentations. However, Dr. Abiti expressed concern over financial barriers that prevent some patients from undergoing necessary tests, leading to stress and advanced-stage diagnoses. She concluded by highlighting the significance of not only breast cancer awareness but also prevention, advising women to maintain healthy lifestyles through regular exercise, balanced diets, and avoiding harmful substances.
