Sunyani: Miss Rita Oppong Yeboah, a Health Promotion Officer at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, has issued a cautionary message to breast cancer patients, advising against self-medication and self-management of the disease. Instead, she emphasized the importance of seeking professional medical care for effective treatment and management, particularly when the disease is detected early. According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Yeboah shared this advice during an interview at a breast cancer screening awareness exercise and seminar. The event was organized by the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional office of the Ghana Cocoa Board in Sunyani as part of this year's breast cancer awareness week activities. The theme of the event was "screen smart, early detection, brighter future." Ms. Yeboah advised women to perform regular self-examinations of their breasts and to report any abnormalities or lumps to nearby health facilities for further examination. She clarified that while not all lumps are cancerous, it is crucial to undergo screening to determine the nature of the lumps. Ms. Yeboah expressed concern about the tendency of some breast cancer patients to delay seeking medical care, which can worsen their condition and hinder effective treatment. She further dispelled misconceptions about breast cancer, asserting that it is a real medical condition rather than a spiritual ailment and encouraged patients to prioritize medical care over seeking spiritual assistance. In a separate interview, Mr. Michael P. K Asumanu, the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Administrator of the Ghana Cocoa Board, voiced concern over the rising cases of breast cancer in Ghana. He highlighted the unfortunate lack of awareness about the disease's impact and called for intensified awareness campaigns to curb its spread. Ms. Rebecca Nkrumah Dadzie, from the Seed Production Division of COCOBOD, also stressed the need for comprehensive public education about breast cancer. She highlighted the importance of understanding its causes, symptoms, and misconceptions, as well as identifying potential risk behaviors associated with the disease.
