Accra: The National Catechists and Evangelists Union of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, has elected Catechist Francis Yao Siegu as the new President of the Union. The election took place at the conclusion of a three-day National Conference held in Anlo Afiadenyigba, within the Keta Municipality.
According to Ghana News Agency, approximately 200 Catechists from the 16 Presbyteries of the Church attended the conference, which revolved around the theme 'Care for creation: the task and mission of the Catechist.' Catechist Siegu emerged victorious in a competitive election against Catechist Mawutor Yao Agbeve from the Dansoman branch in the West Volta Presbytery, securing 76 votes to Agbeve's 70. A third candidate, Catechist Ebenezer Yao Dzordzordzi from the Somanya branch in the Eastern Presbytery, received 39 votes.
Catechist Siegu will succeed Catechist Sylvanus M.Y. Anku, whose six-year term concludes in December 2025. Currently serving as the Catechist of the Sogakope congregation in the South Volta Presbytery, Siegu will lead the Union for a six-year, one-term tenure. Prior to this election, he held the position of President for the West Volta Presbytery branch of the Union for two terms and is the sitting President of the South Volta Presbytery branch.
Expressing gratitude to Union members for their trust, Catechist Siegu committed to prioritizing the welfare of the Union's members. He emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to improve their conditions of service and enhance the Union's standing. Catechist Anku, the outgoing President, praised Siegu's experience and expressed hope that he would elevate the Union to greater heights.
The conference also covered topics such as environmental care, culture and the Church, and strategies for unleashing the potential of Catechists to foster growth in EPCG congregations.
