ChaLoG Commends Government for Reintroducing National Sanitation Day

Accra: The Chamber for Local Governance (ChaLoG) has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for its decision to reintroduce the National Sanitation Day. This initiative designates a specific day each month for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to mobilize citizens for extensive community clean-up activities throughout the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, ChaLoG highlighted that the National Sanitation Day was first established during President John Dramani Mahama's initial term, significantly boosting communal labor enthusiasm among citizens. Dr. Richard Fiadomor, President of ChaLoG, stated in an interview that the initiative aimed to promote cleanliness and sanitation nationwide. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in maintaining a cleaner Ghana and expressed disappointment over the program's cancellation by the previous government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017.

Dr. Fiadomor explained that the discontinuation of the National Sanitation Day had adverse effects, leading to a decline in communal labor enthusiasm and negatively impacting the country's sanitation conditions. He noted that many Ghanaians lost interest in clean-up activities, consequently worsening the sanitation situation.

The ChaLoG President expressed optimism that the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day would revive communal labor enthusiasm and inspire citizens to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings. He urged MMDAs to create effective strategies that promote community participation and ensure the initiative's success.

Dr. Fiadomor also called on MMDAs to utilize financial resources responsibly and implement preventive measures to minimize littering and environmental pollution. He emphasized the crucial role MMDAs play in the initiative's success by fostering community ownership and ensuring effective sanitation improvements.

GNA reported that the National Sanitation Day will be observed in all communities within various municipal and district assemblies to promote better sanitation and a cleaner environment. As the country embarks on this renewed initiative, it is essential to build on past experiences and implement the National Sanitation Day effectively to prioritize community engagement and establish sustainable success strategies.

Meanwhile, residents of Keta Municipality are eagerly preparing for another cleaning exercise following the recent sanitation day event held in Anlo-Afiadenyigba.
