China Hosts IOMed to Boost Global Peace and Mediation Cooperation

Beijing: The Chinese Government has welcomed global backing for the creation of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed), saying it will advance mediation-based dispute resolution. The IOMed, headquartered in Hong Kong, China, responds to global needs for peace, stability, and development.

According to Ghana News Agency, China initiated the IOMed in 2022, collaborating with nearly 20 countries to form the world’s first intergovernmental legal organisation dedicated to mediation-based dispute resolution. Its goal is to offer efficient, peaceful alternatives for resolving disputes and support the United Nations (UN) Charter’s principles.

Ms. Mao Ning, Spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, expressed that the initiative seeks participation from more countries to coordinate with existing international dispute settlement mechanisms, enhancing their effectiveness. She emphasized that the IOMed pools the strengths of all major law systems to foster fair and equitable global governance on the rule of law.

Negotiations on the Convention on the Establishment of the IOMed have concluded, with 60 countries from various continents and international organizations, including the UN, set to attend the signing ceremony on May 30. The Global Forum on International Mediation will follow, addressing issues like mediation of disputes between States and between States and foreign investors, as well as commercial disputes.

Ms. Mao highlighted the advantages of mediation as a flexible and cost-effective dispute resolution method that respects the will of all parties involved. She noted its unique benefits, such as greater flexibility, convenience, and lower costs, aligning with the Eastern tradition of amity and harmony.
