NYANKPALA: Key stakeholders in the agricultural sector gathered to review and optimize maize product profiles at a meeting organized by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (CSIR-SARI) in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The event focused on aligning maize varieties with market demands and farmer preferences, under the auspices of the Genetic Innovation: Accelerated Breeding Initiative (ABI)-Meeting Farmers' Needs with Nutritious, Climate-Resilient Crops project, sponsored by CGIAR. According to Ghana News Agency, the meeting, held near Tamale, brought together breeders, farmers, processors, seed companies, and extension agents. Dr. Francis Kusi, Director of CSIR-SARI, addressed the participants, emphasizing the resilience of CSIR-SARI's maize varieties in the face of recent drought conditions. He urged the attendees to develop a product profile that tackles the ongoing challenges in maize production across th e country. The discussions underscored the importance of breeding maize with traits that satisfy both market and farmer requirements. Participants identified key traits such as drought tolerance, yield, and sensory qualities crucial for local processing and consumption. The meeting resulted in a comprehensive understanding of the target product profiles, defining maize market segments specific to the country's unique agroecological zones. These segments considered factors like maturity, usage, and geographical conditions, ensuring that future maize varieties would be tailored to local farming needs and market expectations. The finalization of several target product profiles provided detailed descriptions of traits essential for successful maize varieties within each segment. This serves as a strategic guide for ongoing and future breeding programs. Charles Tia, CEO of B-Diet, a food processing company, expressed satisfaction with the inclusive approach of the meeting, noting that it effectively addressed th e diverse needs and traits of customers in both urban and rural settings.
