KOFORIDUA: The Eastern Library Authority has introduced an innovative initiative called the 'Library of Things,' designed to provide community members with access to a variety of tools and technological equipment. This project aims to extend the traditional library offerings beyond books, fostering community engagement and supporting diverse interests and needs. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Evans Korletey-Tene, Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Library Authority, announced that the 'Library of Things' includes a collection of tools and equipment available for borrowing by artisans and the general public. The primary requirement for borrowing is registration as a library user. This initiative seeks to promote sustainability through a culture of sharing, allowing individuals to access resources without needing to own them, thereby encouraging collaboration and environmental responsibility. The collection available for borrowing includes items such as sewing machines, hand dryers, screwdriver sets, photo cameras, projectors, car batteries, and playing materials for children. The launch event was attended by executive members of the National Association of Beauticians, the Air Conditioners Repairers Association, and technical students. Mr. Korletey-Tene highlighted that the 'Library of Things' aligns with the library's goals of providing new resources to stimulate imagination, offer leisure activities, and promote lifelong learning. He emphasized the potential for patrons to explore personal interests that might otherwise be inaccessible due to financial or spatial constraints. He also called on philanthropists and non-governmental organizations to contribute additional equipment to support artisanal work. The program is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Technology and Social Change Group at the University of Washington. Mr. David Karikari Frimpong, Head of Informal at the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service, Eastern Region, advised artisans to maintain and return tools promptly to ensure availability for others. Mr. Eric Obeng, Eastern Regional Manager of the Ghana Enterprise Agency, informed participants that the agency collaborates with associations to provide financial support to the youth. He encouraged people to register on the agency's portal to access various support programs.
