Guinea Bissau: Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves has been elected as the new President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, alongside Justice Sengu Mohamed Koroma who will serve as Vice President. Both will hold their positions for a term of four years following their recent swearing-in ceremony. According to Ghana News Agency, the election which saw Justice Gonçalves and Justice Koroma rise to their new roles occurred among the college of five judges of the Court. Justice Gonçalves, hailing from Cabo Verde, takes over from Justice Edward Amoako Asante, who has been at the helm for the past six years. Meanwhile, Justice Koroma from Sierra Leone succeeds Justice Gberi-bè Ouattara as Vice President. The swearing-in ceremony was held in Guinea Bissau on Thursday, October 6, 2022, officiated by President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, former President of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community. The terms for both positions are non-renewable. During his inaugural address, President-elect Jus tice Gonçalves shared his vision for the Court, emphasizing the principles of responsibility and dialogue. He affirmed the Court's duty to uphold ECOWAS laws and its mission to remain independent, reliable, efficient, and accessible. Furthermore, Justice Gonçalves committed to engaging in continuous dialogue with other ECOWAS institutions, member states, and civil societies, ensuring financial prudence in managing the institution's funds. The ECOWAS Court of Justice, under its new leadership, promises to maintain its foundational roles while adapting to the evolving judicial needs of the region.
