Quito: Ecuador has announced the suspension of its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), signaling a significant shift in its foreign policy and diplomatic relations with Morocco. The South American nation, which first recognized the SADR in 1983 and established an embassy in 2009, has taken this step to align more closely with Morocco's stance on regional territorial matters. According to Ghana News Agency, Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, communicated this decision to her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a recent phone conversation. In addition to the verbal communication, Ecuador has also dispatched a formal notification to the representatives of the SADR separatists based in Quito. This move by Ecuador is in accordance with an ongoing effort led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, aimed at consolidating Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara region. The Moroccan Autonomy Plan has been emphasized as the exclusive framework for resolving the longsta nding regional dispute. Ecuador's decision is expected to recalibrate its diplomatic ties with Morocco, marking a new phase in the relationship between the two countries. As Ecuador repositions its foreign policy, the impact of this decision on regional diplomacy remains to be closely observed.
