ACCRA: A 32-year-old unemployed man, Geofrey Obuobi, has been sentenced to six months in prison with hard labor by the Accra Circuit Court Nine for stealing copper core cables from a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, found Obuobi guilty on charges of intentionally interfering with the distribution system, causing unlawful damage, and theft. According to Ghana News Agency, the stolen copper cables were valued at GhS 7,550.00. The charges against Obuobi stem from an incident on October 16, 2024, when Seidu Amadu, a resident of Lartebiokoshie, noticed Obuobi behaving suspiciously with a sack. Upon being confronted by Amadu, Obuobi attempted to flee, prompting Amadu to pursue him on a motorbike while raising an alarm. Obuobi was subsequently apprehended, and a search of the sack revealed 1 x 240 copper cables belonging to ECG and a plier. Further investigations revealed that Obuobi is an ex-convict who had completed a one-year prison sentence for a similar crime just two weeks prior to this incident. The Electricity Company of Ghana has been battling frequent thefts of electrical cables from their transformers, prompting them to launch campaigns urging the public to report suspicious activities near their installations.
