Fear Grips Aborlove-Nolopi Community as Thousands of Dead Fish Surface in Lagoon

Accra: The Aborlove Nolopi community in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region is facing a severe environmental crisis as thousands of dead fish and fingerlings have been discovered floating in the Lagoon, sparking widespread panic and frustration among residents. The community believes the mass fish deaths were caused by the use of illegal fishing methods, including chemicals and harmful substances.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Simon Awadzi, the Assembly Member of the area, stated that the community relies heavily on fishing, with about 98 percent of residents depending on it for survival. The death of the fish leaves many families without a source of income, threatening their livelihoods and food security. He emphasized the community's reliance on the lagoon for fishing and other aquatic activities, making this crisis particularly devastating, and called for quick intervention from authorities to protect aquatic life.

Mr. Awadzi expressed the community's outrage and demanded immediate action from the government and relevant authorities to address the crisis. He called for urgent investigations into the cause of the fish deaths and stricter enforcement of fishing regulations to prevent future occurrences. Additionally, he appealed to the government to protect their livelihoods and the environment, improve security to safeguard local fisherfolk from threats and intimidation by unauthorized fishing groups, and take concrete steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The mass fish deaths have also raised concerns about potential health risks associated with consuming fish caught in the affected waters. Mr. Awadzi urged that laboratory testing be conducted to determine the cause of the fish deaths and assess any potential health risks. Some residents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency insisted that the government and relevant authorities must take immediate action to address the crisis, prevent further fish deaths, and urged fishing authorities to investigate the causes and protect the lagoon.

Residents highlighted that the Aborlove Nolopi Lagoon is a vital part of the community's ecosystem, and its degradation has severe consequences for the environment and the livelihoods of residents. They called for stronger and stricter laws to be enforced by the government to protect the lagoon and its fish.

The Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC), when contacted, explained that activities such as the use of chemicals in fishing could contribute to the fish deaths in the lagoon. They pledged to collaborate with necessary authorities, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drugs Authority, along with the community, to investigate the cause and find possible solutions to restore the lagoon and ensure a brighter future for the community.

The fisherfolks in the area have been advised to prioritize their health and practice healthier, appropriate, and better methods of fishing to avoid penalties from authorities.
