Financial Prudence Urged to Combat Rising Divorce Rates

ACCRA: The Reverend William Amartey Quaye, Resident Pastor of the Christian Worship Centre, has issued a caution to married couples about the dangers of financial mismanagement, warning that the pursuit of luxurious lifestyles is contributing significantly to marital discord and divorce. Speaking at a summit focused on the impact of divorce, Rev Quaye stressed the importance of living within one's means as a safeguard against financial conflicts that strain marriages. According to Ghana News Agency, the summit, organized by the Glorious Women on the Go (GWOGO) of the Christian Worship Centre, aimed to educate couples about the societal and familial impacts of divorce. Rev Quaye highlighted a recent increase in divorce cases, attributing many to financial crises. Citing statistics from Ghana's 2021 Population and Housing Census, he noted that 553,065 individuals have been divorced, while another 405,090 have experienced separation, with a significant majority being women. Rev Quaye underscored the importance of modesty and financial management, stating, "As a Pastor, I believe in modesty, what I don't have I don't have it! Even what I have I need to manage it well because you don't know what tomorrow will bring." The summit also featured insights from other experts, including Licensed Clinical Health Psychologist Madam Dorcas Ntiamoah Sackey, who advised couples facing divorce to seek counseling to navigate the emotional challenges involved. Private Legal Practitioner Mr Eric Adjei-Laryea advised couples to consider divorce only as a last resort, encouraging them to explore counseling and communication to address marital issues.
