Five Deaths Recorded in Accra After Heavy Rains

Accra: A total of five people have been reported dead after Sunday’s heavy rains in some parts of the Greater Accra Region, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said on Wednesday. Three of the fatalities occurred in the Ga East Municipality and two in the Adentan Municipality. The victims in Ga East included one male adult and two male children, while the Adentan casualties comprised a male adult and a female child.

According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Kate Opoku, Director of Communications at NADMO, disclosed this information in an interview. She noted that all 28 individuals who were trapped in their homes due to the deluge have been successfully rescued. The rescue efforts were conducted through a collaborative operation involving the Ghana National Fire Service and the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Madam Opoku also stated that the water levels have since receded, allowing all displaced individuals to return to their homes. The municipalities affected by the downpour included Ga East, Adentan, La Nkwantanang Madina, and Ga West. In light of the recent events, she urged the public to avoid constructing buildings on waterways and riverbanks to prevent future flooding incidents.

The four-hour downpour on May 18 affected several areas, including Adabraka, Kaneshie, Weija, Dome, Adentan, Agbogba, and Oyarifa, causing significant disruptions and distress to the residents.
