Gabès Environmental Crisis Requires Immediate Action, Declares President Saïed

Tunisia: In a critical meeting with Health Minister Mustapha Ferjani, Minister of the Environment Habib Abid, and Minister of the Industry, Energy, and Mines Fatma Thabet Chiboub, President Kaïs Saïed emphasized the urgent need to address the environmental degradation in Gabès. He condemned the "criminal" decisions that have historically damaged the region, leading to severe human casualties. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse - English, President Saïed pointed out the alarming rise in diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis, alongside the destruction of the oases and local ecosystem. He highlighted recent cases of poisoning and asphyxiation, which are linked to the establishment of the Chemical Group in Gabès-a decision opposed by several African countries. President Saïed reflected on his visits to Gabès in 2013, 2014, and 2015, when local youth presented comprehensive studies on the environmental issues and proposed restoration methods for the region's unique natural balance. He expressed regret o ver the neglect of these proposals and noted recent incidents of intoxication and asphyxiation requiring hospitalization, particularly at Rabta Hospital, as evidence of the mismanagement of industrial facilities. The President stressed the necessity of allocating resources and enforcing measures to protect Gabès and Tunisia from the longstanding environmental crisis. He reiterated that existing studies and solutions should be utilized, emphasizing the need to create conditions that prevent future environmental incidents. President Saïed called for the implementation of effective mechanisms to safeguard Gabès and Tunisia from ongoing environmental violations.
