Gaza Aid Convoy Activist Calls for Global Protest Against Israeli Practices

Ankara: An activist from the Gaza-bound humanitarian mission, Global Sumud Flotilla, declared on Tuesday that "there is no ceasefire in real life" in the Palestinian enclave, urging global citizens to "speak up" against Israel's continued actions in the blockaded territory. According to Anadolu Agency, Mexican activist Al Muatasem Belah Alwiraikat Flores, speaking aboard one of the flotilla's boats, highlighted the discrepancy between reported ceasefires and the on-ground reality in Gaza. Flores noted that despite the supposed ceasefire in place since last October, the Israeli army continues its attacks, resulting in the deaths of at least 877 Palestinians and injuries to 2,602 others, as per Gaza's Health Ministry. Flores emphasized the long-standing plight of Gaza's residents, stating, "Since 1948, the people of Gaza have not seen a normal day, where they can just sit around without hearing the sound of bombs, or without their homes being taken by occupiers." He condemned the recent Israeli attack on a si milar aid flotilla near Crete, Greece, labeling it a "shame" for the European Union due to its implications of complicity with Israel. In late April, Israeli forces intercepted flotilla boats in international waters near Crete, which included 345 participants from 39 countries, among them Turkish citizens. Flores criticized the EU's apparent support for Israeli actions, calling it an "act of piracy" and urging people worldwide to protest against ongoing Israeli violations. Argentinian activist Lautaro Rivara, part of the convoy, described Israel's interception of the aid flotilla as a "violation" of international maritime law. The flotilla organizers announced on Tuesday that all vessels had been seized by Israel, with ongoing efforts to gather more information about what they termed an "illegal abduction." The flotilla, consisting of 54 boats, embarked from the Turkish district of Marmaris in an attempt to challenge the Israeli blockade on Gaza, imposed since 2007. This blockade has severely impacted the region's 2.4 million residents, pushing them to the brink of starvation. Further highlighting the situation, the Israeli army's offensive initiated in October 2023 has resulted in over 72,000 deaths and more than 172,000 injuries, causing extensive devastation across Gaza.
