ACCRA: In a bid to safeguard Ghana's democratic process, Albert Kofi Owusu, General Manager of the Ghana News Agency, has urged a unified effort to combat misinformation and disinformation as the nation prepares for its 2024 general elections. His call to action, emphasizing a collective responsibility to ensure truth in electoral communications, was made during the 5th Guess Lecture Series hosted by the UPSA Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Studies. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kofi Owusu's address focused on the urgent need for cooperation among the Electoral Commission, political parties, media outlets, and citizens to curtail the spread of fake news, which he described as a growing threat. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing factual information over falsehoods to preserve the integrity of Ghana's democratic process. The event also featured remarks from Prof. Emmanuel Selase Asamoah, Dean of FITCS, who pointed out the serious impact of misinformation and disinformation on the political landscape. He encouraged students to apply the insights from Mr. Owusu's lecture to better navigate the challenges of misinformation, underscoring the lecture's value as a tool for understanding and addressing these issues. The 5th Guest Lecture Series served as a critical forum for discussion, providing students and stakeholders with valuable perspectives on the challenges posed by false information.
