Accra: The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has announced its commitment to vigorously enforce environmental standards to foster sustainability and responsible environmental management. At the 2024 World Standards Day, Prof. Alex Dodoo, Director General of the GSA, unveiled comprehensive strategies to ensure industries adhere to new standards aimed at reducing pollution and enhancing resource efficiency. According to Ghana News Agency, the GSA has developed a robust framework of environmental standards that target critical areas such as emission control, waste management, and the efficient use of resources. These standards, which include guidelines for water and air quality management, are designed to curb the environmental impact of industrial activities by promoting cleaner production techniques. Prof. Dodoo highlighted the importance of renewable energy standards in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. "By setting standards for renewable energy technologies, we are enabling the transition to a low -carbon economy while addressing the energy needs of our growing population," he explained. The GSA has been proactive in promoting the use of solar and wind energy through these standards. Further efforts by the GSA include collaboration with the Minerals Commission and other regulatory bodies to enforce standards that ensure responsible mining practices. These standards focus on environmental restoration and the prevention of water source contamination post-mining activities. The GSA is also tackling one of Ghana's significant environmental challenges-plastic pollution-by implementing standards for biodegradable packaging materials and stricter plastic waste management regulations. "This initiative is crucial in reducing plastic waste, which is choking our environment," Prof. Dodoo stated. The enforcement of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 14001 series, which pertains to environmental management, is a priority for the GSA. Prof. Dodoo emphasized the necessity of making these stan dards mandatory for all mining companies to ensure sustainable operations. Mrs. Regina Vowotor, Director of the Standards Directorate, stressed the role of international standards in making life safer and promoting climate-conscious practices across industries. "The entire standard system is built on cooperation. Together, we can accelerate progress toward the 2030 agenda," she remarked. World Standards Day, celebrated annually in October, recognizes the collaborative efforts of experts worldwide who develop technical agreements that shape international, regional, or national standards. This year's theme, "Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for the Changing Climate," calls for urgent collective action and innovation in response to climate change.
