Accra: The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has recently inaugurated three new technical committees, aiming to leverage the diverse expertise of its members to bolster the agency's effectiveness and governance. The committees are focused on Standards, Metrology, and Conformity Assessment, with their introduction being a strategic move to improve the GSA's operational standards and decision-making processes. According to Ghana News Agency, the inauguration event was led by GSA Board Chairman Professor Felix Mills Robertson. Members of the committees took official and secrecy oaths during the ceremony. Professor Alex Dodoo, the Director-General of the GSA, addressed the members, emphasizing that the formation of these committees aligns with the objectives outlined in the GSA Act. He highlighted that the selection of committee members was meticulously done to include individuals from industry, academia, and GSA's retired staff to ensure a rich pool of knowledge and experience. Professor Dodoo explained that the composition of each committee includes one board member and one board technical committee member, allowing for effective communication and integration of committee discussions into broader technical strategies. The purpose of these committees is to ensure that the GSA adopts the best practices in standards development, testing, inspection, certification, and methodology. The Director-General also stressed the importance of independent and impartial advice from the committee members. He expressed his anticipation that the technical committees would enhance governance within the GSA, allowing management and the board to make informed decisions based on scientific, ethical, and professional grounds. Furthermore, he outlined the GSA's goal to increase transparency, particularly for consumers, and mentioned that each committee would elect its chairperson to promote openness. The tenure of committee membership will last for three years, potentially extending to a second term. Professor Dodoo encouraged the member s to contribute their comprehensive knowledge and expertise to ensure that all stakeholder voices are represented and heard.
