ACCRA: Ghana's Parliament, led by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is set to host the Second General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) in Accra. The assembly will take place from October 25 to October 27, welcoming legislative leaders from across Africa to discuss critical issues and forge collaborative strategies. According to Ghana News Agency, CoSPAL was created in 2020 to enhance dialogue and cooperation among African legislative leaders. The assembly aims to address common challenges, develop joint strategies, and mobilize collective action for Africa's development. The first General Assembly occurred in May 2022 in Abuja, under the guidance of Nigeria's then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila. That meeting focused on post-COVID economic recovery and democratic development, laying the groundwork for ongoing collaboration. The upcoming assembly in Accra is expected to draw approximately 120 participants, including 15 Speakers and Presidents of National Legislatures, 30 Deputy Speakers and Presidents, as well as clerks, secretary generals, and supporting staff from various African parliaments. The meeting will continue the work begun in Abuja by fostering unity and strengthening legislative governance across the continent. The statement from Ghana's Parliament emphasized that the assembly represents a significant step in improving legislative effectiveness and promoting regional solidarity to tackle shared challenges. The event will also serve as an opportunity for Ghana to highlight its democratic practices and hospitality to the continent's legislative leaders.
