KUMASI: The government of Ghana, through the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has launched a new document aimed at standardizing and harmonizing pharmaceutical services across the nation. Titled "Standards and Practice Guidelines for Pharmaceutical Services" (SPGPS), the document sets forth minimum standard guidelines for pharmaceutical services in health facilities, establishing a consistent level of care that pharmacy departments are expected to provide. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director General of GHS, described the document as the foundation for strengthening pharmaceutical services in Ghana. He emphasized that its rollout is a key component of the service's strategic plan for 2024 to 2026, focusing on enhancing access to quality essential health care and population-based services. Dr. Kuma-Aboagye made these remarks during the launch of the SPGPS and a training program for pharmaceutical workers in Kumasi. Dr. Kuma-Aboagye highlighted that the initiative aligns with Ghan a's strategic goals to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. He pointed out that the country's Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy remains central to improving health outcomes. One major challenge in pharmacy practice, he noted, has been the reliance on outdated systems and guidelines, which the SPGPS aims to rectify by providing updated standards and practices. The document is expected to improve patient outcomes, enhance patient safety, and efficiently manage the medicines component of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) claims. It also aims to facilitate the integration of clinical and ward pharmacy practices into institutional care and ensure smooth delivery across the Network of Practice (NoP) facilities, with model health centers serving as hubs. Alhaji Kofi Baryeh, a former Ashanti Regional Manager of Medical Stores, urged pharmacists to focus on clinical pharmacy and incorporate data analysis into their practices. Dr. Angela Ackon, representing the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed optimism that the training and implementation of the guidelines would lead to improvements in Ghana's health systems.
