Accra: Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana's Minister for Education, has called for the re-election of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to allow them to continue and complete the ongoing modernization of the country's education sector. Speaking at the Africa Skills Week Summit in Accra, Dr. Adutwum emphasized the transformative changes in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), distinguishing them from past efforts and aligning them with current market demands. According to Ghana News Agency, the New Patriotic Party has initiated substantial reforms in the TVET sector, aiming to revamp both the infrastructure and the public perception of technical education. He noted the establishment of a new TVET school in Anyiman, which is equipped with modern facilities, as a prime example of these efforts. "Any child that goes there will want to pursue TVET," he remarked during his address, highlighting the need to make technical training more appealing to the youth. The minister underscored the importance of cont inuity in government to sustain and build upon the innovative educational strategies introduced during their term. He pointed out the need for a shift from merely repairing foreign-made equipment to fostering innovation and manufacturing within Ghana. Dr. Adutwum suggested emulating Germany's successful TVET model, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with hands-on training. Moreover, Dr. Adutwum addressed the negative perceptions surrounding TVET, which is often seen as a track for less academically inclined students. He stressed that effective marketing and changing parental attitudes are crucial to drawing more students into this vital educational pathway. At the same summit, Prof. Mohammed Belhocine, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation at the African Union Commission, spoke about the financial challenges facing Africa's education sector. He cited a UNESCO report that estimated a need for approximately US$90 billion to achieve Sustainable D evelopment Goal 4 by 2030. Prof. Belhocine called for increased governmental funding across Africa to better support educational advancements.
