Ghana’s Inmates Crowned Continental Chess Champions

Accra: Ghana’s youth inmates at the Senior Correctional Centre in Accra have been crowned champions of the Continental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners. Under the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Freedom initiative, Ghana triumphed over Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Kenya to emerge victorious in the event.

According to Ghana News Agency, Team Ghana was represented by three teams, two of which secured first and third places, with Malawi claiming the second position. This competition is part of a global movement that uses chess as a tool for education, discipline, and social development within correctional facilities.

The Ghanaian teams, trained rigorously, were led by Mentors Chess Academy with support from Blazing Dreams, a youth-focused organization. Through dedication and teamwork, the boys have significantly improved in their understanding of chess and their overall confidence.

Mrs. Yayra Ashong Mettle, Officer in Charge of the Senior Correctional Centre, commended the winners for their commitment. She expressed, ‘Something good is in you to give back to society. All is not lost-you have made Ghana proud.’

FIDE launched the Chess for Freedom initiative in 2021 to introduce chess into correctional systems globally, providing a low-cost yet impactful educational platform. Ghana’s youth have been active participants, showing promise not only in competition but also in personal growth.

With the fifth Intercontinental Chess Championship for Prisoners scheduled for October 14 to 16, 2025, preparations are already underway as Ghana aims for the ultimate victory.
