Gifting Sights: Eyeglasses Bring Hope to Visually Impaired Schoolchildren in Jirapa

Jirapa: Melisa Aganpoga Awuni, a 13-year-old student at Ganaa Memorial Basic School, is among 15 children who received eyeglasses from Bliss Eye Care, in collaboration with Ghana Vision, to address various eye conditions. The initiative aims to improve academic performance and participation in society for affected students in Jirapa. According to Ghana News Agency, Melisa expressed mixed emotions upon receiving her eyeglasses, which she hopes will restore her academic standing. However, she expressed uncertainty about whether her father would permit her to wear them, as he had previously refused her the aid. Teachers confirmed that Melisa's eye condition had been ongoing, and efforts to change her father's stance had been unsuccessful. Bliss Eye Care, a private clinic in Wa, partnered with Ghana Vision under the Blissful Sight for Kids (BS4Ks) project to provide eyeglasses to the students. Since its launch in 2015, the project has benefited thousands in the Upper West Region through free eye screenings, med ications, surgeries, and eyeglasses. The children expressed gratitude for this intervention, which they believe will significantly impact their education. Dr. Zakarea Al-Hassan Balure, Optometrist and Manager of Bliss Eye Care, emphasized the importance of parental involvement in children's eye care. Naa Dinaa Donglabong Ganaa III, Paramount Chief of the Jirapa Traditional Area, highlighted the critical role of early detection in treating eye conditions and thanked Bliss Eye Care for its timely efforts. Mr. Huudu A. K Kunaateh, Jirapa Municipal Director of Education, received the eyeglasses on the children's behalf, marking the initiative as a first for the municipality. He noted the financial barriers some parents face in accessing treatment, making the clinic's intervention crucial. Madam Florence Angsomwine, Jirapa Municipal Director of Health Services, shared her personal experience with her son's vision issues, urging parents to support their children in using the eyeglasses and seek early treatment f or eye problems.
