Accra: The Ghana Internet Safety Foundation (GISF) has hailed the introduction of the Ghana Child Online Protection Framework as a crucial regulatory advancement designed to significantly bolster the safety of children navigating the digital world. The framework, launched in Accra by Second Lady Mrs. Samira Bawumia, seeks to safeguard children from various cybersecurity threats, including cyberbullying and online abuse. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Emmanuel Adinkra, President and Chief Information Security Officer of GISF, expressed confidence in the framework's potential to fundamentally improve the online environment for children. He emphasized the importance of online safety in protecting children, fostering healthy digital habits, and promoting a more positive online experience. The launch event, themed 'Empowering Young Minds: Creating Opportunities, Promoting a Safer Digital Ghana,' coincided with the 2023 National Cybersecurity Challenge's finale, where St. Peters Senior High School was declare d the winner. The framework, developed in collaboration with international and local partners such as UNICEF, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), aims to address the rising internet usage among children. Mr. Adinkra highlighted the associated risks, such as online harassment, age-inappropriate content, and the potential exploitation by online predators. The initiative underscores the need for robust safeguards to prevent emotional distress and mental health issues among children resulting from such dangers. Mr. Adinkra also pointed out the risks associated with children's lack of understanding of the implications of sharing personal information online, which could lead to identity theft, fraud, or exploitation. Furthermore, he noted the potential impact of false or misleading information encountered online, stressing the importance of guiding children towards more accurate and trustworthy sources to positively shape their education and worldview. Th e Ghana Child Online Protection Framework aligns with global initiatives by organizations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and WeProtect Global Alliance, aiming to create a safer and more empowering online environment for Ghana's youth.
