ACCRA: The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a strong condemnation of an assault on an EIB Network court correspondent by supporters of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, leaving the journalist with injuries and prompting calls for swift legal action against the perpetrators. According to Ghana News Agency, the attack on Murtala Inusah, EIB Network's Legal Affairs Correspondent, took place while he was covering a court case involving Bishop Amoako and his wife. The case pertained to an accident involving their teenage son that resulted in two fatalities. The GJA reported that Inusah was attacked by the bishop's sympathizers who objected to his filming of the proceedings at the Circuit Court in Accra. In the course of the assault, Inusah suffered cuts on his fingers, severe bodily pain, and lost his mobile phone. A police court warrant officer who attempted to intervene was also assaulted. In a statement released on Friday, the GJA called on police authorities to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attack. The association emphasized the need for the judiciary to impose severe penalties upon their conviction to deter future occurrences. The GJA also appealed to the Judicial Service and the Police to ensure the safety of journalists covering court proceedings, highlighting their essential role in upholding the public's right to information. The GJA urged media practitioners to remain resilient and not be intimidated by such acts, reinforcing the importance of fulfilling their professional and constitutional duties. The association also advised the media to adhere to ethical standards in reporting on the case involving Bishop Amoako's family, particularly regarding the sensitive issue of their 16-year-old son. The GJA referenced both the GJA Code of Ethics 2017 and the Children's Act, 1998 (Act 560), reminding journalists to protect the rights of minors by avoiding the disclosure of the teenage suspect's identity and seeking parental consen t for interviews or photographs. The statement further cautioned the public to exercise restraint and tolerance, particularly with the upcoming Election 2024, in support of the media's work under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
