GJA Volta/Oti to Mark World Press Freedom Day with Clean-Up Exercise and Get-Together

Accra: The Volta/Oti Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will commemorate World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2025 with a Clean-Up Exercise and a Get-Together on Saturday, May 3, which coincides with National Sanitation Day. The Regional Executive Committee of the GJA, in a press statement signed by Mr. Lambert Ativor, Administrator of the Association, on behalf of Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, the Regional Chairman, said the initiative reflects the Association’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.

According to Ghana News Agency, the statement said journalists across the Volta and Oti regions would join the nationwide clean-up activities in Ho, the regional capital, and in all district capitals. The clean-up is part of efforts to encourage public responsibility and highlight the media’s advocacy role in national development. ‘All media houses are encouraged to use their platforms to mobilize public support and participation for the exercise,’ the statement noted, adding that the event will serve as a symbol of the media’s contribution to societal well-being beyond newsroom duties.

Later in the evening at 1700 hours, the GJA will host a Get-Together at the Press Centre in Ho. The event will provide an opportunity for journalists and media practitioners to reflect on press freedom, engage in dialogue on media development, and foster professional networking in a relaxed atmosphere. ‘All members and practitioners are urged to participate fully in these activities as we celebrate World Press Freedom Day not just with statements, but through practical actions that demonstrate our commitment to society,’ the release added.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3, serves as a global reminder of the importance of free, independent, and pluralistic media in fostering democracy and transparency.
