GNFS Recommends Fire Extinguishers Following Tema Community 11 Fire

Tema: Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Services (GNFS) successfully doused a fire outbreak at Tema Community 11 in the early hours of Wednesday. The fire, which occurred at about 0200 hours, consumed one room in the house which contained documents and a refrigerator.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kwabena Agyapong, a taxi driver who detected the fire, had just finished church prayers and was on his way home when he noticed the flames. He initially thought someone was burning something deliberately, so he parked his car and went to knock on the door to warn the residents about the danger of burning at that hour. Upon closer inspection, Mr. Agyapong realized the house itself was on fire. He then alerted the residents by knocking on the door and shouting to wake them and nearby residents for assistance.

The residents of the house confirmed that no one was sleeping in the room where the fire originated, resulting in no injuries. A distress call was made to the fire service, and personnel were dispatched promptly to extinguish the fire.

Mr. Solomon Koranteng, an Assistant Station Officer at the Tema Regional Office of the GNFS, stated that the cause of the fire was not immediately known and that investigations would be conducted to determine it. He emphasized the importance of having fire extinguishers in homes to control fires while awaiting the arrival of fire personnel. Mr. Koranteng noted that with an extinguisher, the residents might have been able to prevent the fire from escalating.

He further advised the public to turn off all appliances before going to bed or leaving the house to prevent potential fire outbreaks. He also urged residents to memorize and save the fire emergency number, 192, in their phones for quick access during emergencies.
