Ketu South: Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has confirmed the government's commitment to protecting the residents of Salakope, Amutsinu, and Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality from the impact of tidal waves. He emphasized the importance of the Blekusu Sea Defense wall project, which is expected to offer a long-term solution to these challenges.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gunu made these remarks during the inauguration of a seven-member committee tasked with investigating alleged abuses related to reclaimed land in Keta. He assured that the government is diligently working within the budget outlined by the Finance Minister for 2025 to address the tidal wave issues effectively.

Mr. Gunu criticized the previous government, led by Nana Addo, for abandoning the sea defense project initiated by President John Dramani Mahama. He pledged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would prioritize the welfare of the affected citizens. He urged the residents to remain calm and support the government's efforts to deliver a lasting solution.

In the interim, Mr. Gunu stated that he, along with the MCE for Ketu South, plans to visit the affected areas to distribute food and other relief items. Temporary shelters are also being considered for those displaced by the destruction.

The government plans to collaborate with the Ghana Gas Company to improve the quality of shelters for the victims, as the current structures are inadequate. Additionally, discussions are underway with the Electricity Company of Ghana to relocate high-tension electricity poles to ensure the safety of the residents.

Mr. Gunu also mentioned that Mr. Governance Kwame Agbodza, the Minister for Roads and Highways, has been consulted to develop solutions to protect local roads from further damage caused by the sea.

A recent visit by the Ghana News Agency to the affected areas revealed ongoing destruction due to tidal waves, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention. Residents continue to appeal for swift action to prevent further damage and ensure their safety.
