Government Slashes Registration Fees for Biker Couriers

Accra: Mr Samuel George, the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, has announced a significant reduction in the registration fee for single biker couriers, lowering it from Ghc 1070 to Ghc 570. The announcement was made during a stakeholder meeting with courier operators in Accra, aimed at addressing enforcement issues in their operations.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Minister also revealed a reduction in the annual renewal fee from Ghc 600 to Ghc 250. This policy change is set to be implemented in November 2025 alongside the new budget, with a special dispensation for single bikers. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Association of Licensed Courier Companies Ghana, Courier Association Ghana, Commercial National Motor Riders Union, Motorcycle Couriers Union, and the Yango delivery service.

The government has placed a moratorium on enforcement actions involving Police road checks for courier operators for the remainder of 2025. The Minister instructed the Postal and Courier Regulatory Commission to establish a streamlined registration process, utilizing a USSD shortcode and an app, to minimize the need for operators to visit Commission offices for registration.

Enforcement of the new regulation is scheduled to commence on April 1, 2026. The Minister emphasized that anyone violating the agreement after this date would face legal consequences, stating, "So it means that you have about seven months from now before the next enforcement operation will start. No one will have excuses at that time."

The initiative aims to sanitize the courier system and enhance operational efficiency. Courier service operators have expressed their appreciation for the government's decision to reduce fees and suspend enforcement until the end of 2025.
