Government Urged to Address Promotion Delays for Teachers

ACCRA: The Greater Accra Regional Chairperson of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Madam Sarah Oye Owiredu, has urged the government to take action to resolve ongoing delays in the promotion process for teachers, which she claims is a significant source of demotivation and anxiety among educators in the region. According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Owiredu highlighted the issue during an award ceremony for teachers in Nungua, Accra, emphasizing that the delay in promotions is affecting teachers' morale and productivity. She pointed out that some Deputy Directors have remained in their positions for nine years without advancement, leaving them at risk of retiring without receiving their due benefits. The established rule suggests that staff should not take more than three years to progress to the next grade, a standard that could enhance teachers' confidence and efficiency. Madam Owiredu criticized the current situation, where teachers invest in furthering their education only to encounter b arriers in their career progression, describing it as a setback to teacher motivation. She commended the dedication of teachers in the Greater Accra region and stated that the award ceremony aimed to recognize and motivate them for their critical role in education and nation-building. She reassured teachers that GNAT is committed to advocating for their interests and addressing the challenges they face. Additionally, she called for collective responsibility among teachers and citizens to maintain peace during the upcoming December 7 elections, urging the Electoral Commission to act with fairness and transparency to build trust among stakeholders. In total, 25 teachers from first and second cycle schools received awards at the event, which focused on the theme: "Valuing Teachers' Voices: The Role of the Teacher in Maintaining Peace Before, During, and After the December 7 Elections."
